45' Grand Banks Alaskan Europa with Portuguese Bridge

1973 wooden Alaskan 45' American Marine / Grand Banks.  The vessel is hull number 5 of only 8 reported ever being built.  She is powered by twin American Marine / John Deer 6404DF-02 diesels with 2350 original hours. A singe 7 kw Onan diesel gen set provides vessel power while underway.  In 2002-2003 $55k U.S.  was spent  to extensively refit her.  Some of the work completed included a new mast, lower windows and frames, new bridge electronics, rebuilt or replaced pumps, blowers, belts.  Her last drydocking was in 2007. Thru hulls were pulled and inspected and two were re-placed, as well as backing blocks replaced.  With 740 gallons fuel capacity, 263 gallons fresh water and a cruising speed of 9.5 knots at about 6gal/hr, she has a range of 1,200 miles.

General Description: The WV "Salishan" is a displacement hull-trawler designed motor yacht constructed of wood timbers and planks. The vessel is powered by two (2) John Deere 6 cylinder diesel engines. Below deck and forward is the chain locker. Aft is a bulkhead. Aft is the forward cabin fitted with a "V" berth, lockers, and storage space. Aft is bulkhead thence the companionway. To port is the guest cabin fitted with upper and lower berths, lockers, and storage space. To starboard is the head fitted with a toilet, sink, and shower. Aft is a bulkhead and steps leading up to the salon. Aft of the bulkhead is the engine space fitted with the main engines, batteries, manual bilge pump, Onan generator, and other components. Aft is a bulkhead. Thence aft is a storage locker. Aft is the lazarette fitted with the steering gear. On deck and forward is the ground tackle and windlass. Aft is a breakwater.  Thence aft a raised deck. Aft is the house fitted with windows all around. The helm is sighted forward and to starboard. The galley is to port. The salon is aft with a dining table and seating. Aft is a companionway door leading to the after deck. To starboard in the salon is a companionway door leading to the shelter deck. The vessel is fitted with a flying bridge deck over the house. Forward is the helm. Aft are back-to-back bench seats. Davits are sighted to starboard and aft. A mast is sighted mid and aft of the helm. Stainless steel railing or lifelines are fitted about the bridge deck. Bulwarks are noted on the main deck and are fitted with wood cap rail. The vessel is fitted with a swim platform mounted to the transom. The vessel is painted white.

The History of the

Coos King

The Coos King was commissioned by the Government to haul rock barges for the construction of the north and south jetties at Coos Head. The year was 1923. She was constructed of 100% Port Orford cedar which at the time was in huge supply in that part of Oregon. At 52’ long and with her “Huge” Atlas Imperial 110 diesel engine she was the first diesel tug ever built in Coos Bay. She was also the largest wooden tug ever built there. She was actually constructed by the Hilstrom Bros. ship yard. This yard suffered a fire many years later however and so records pertaining to this boat as far as I can find do not exist.

After the jetties were built, (approx. 1930) the King was put to work by numerous lumber companies hauling log rafts down the Coos River. She also during this time carried the duty of Coos Bay pilot boat. During this time she assisted in many ship rescues on Coos Head and at one time saved the waterfront of Coos bay by pulling the burning pier off its pilings and into the bay. I believe this was in the early 40’s. She was re-powered in the 40’s with a 671 jimmy and continued out life as a working tug until 1978. In 78 she was stripped of all equipment and towed out to a mud flat to be burned. My Grandfather who had skippered her for some 25 years bought the salvage rights for a dollar and kept her from being burned and re-floated her and towed her up Catching inlet where she was then passed around for back moorage until 1980, when my grandfather took me up to look at her. I ended up purchasing her and had her trucked to Seattle where between 1981 and 1986 I restored the hull to brand new. She received 4 new frames forward and a new stem and 4 new frames aft as well as all her stern blocking and approx. 45% of her planking was replaced. I was fortunate enough to be able to obtain old growth Port Orford planking from the same mill that milled the original lumber for her in 1923. After that the Northwest wooden boat school was commissioned to build her a new super structure and in 1991 this was installed. Then in 1994 she was fitted with new deck beams and a new deck.

MASTER stateroom is aft of the Pilothouse, with centerline Queen and ensuite Vacu-Flush head and stall shower. In addition there are accommodations for 12 GUESTS in FIVE GUEST CABINS (all with 6'7-1/2" headroom): A full width stateroom foreward on main deck with centerline Queen. Stateroom below fully foreward has a Queen, single upper and settee/lower single. Next aft to port is a head and shower, and stateroom to starboard with stacked single berths outboard. Next aft are port and starboard doubles with Queen lowers.
OWNER'S CABIN with 7' headroom is on the BRIDGE DECK level, with access to the boat deck foreward or stay inside, up several steps to the RAISED PILOTHOUSE with 80-3/4" headroom.

Mechanical Equipment & Engine Details
Walk-around ENGINE ROOM with 83" headroom is aft of the lower deck guest cabins and houses twin GM 8V71 main engines, TwinDisc MG-509 gears, two gensets, air conditioning and offers very good access to all machinery and ship's systems. Aluminum grill bilge cover plates, 15' work bench with tools, vise and grinder, and a washer/dryer. All machinery is KEEL COOLED freshwater for generators, mains and air conditioners. NO SALT WATER enters the boat. Dual fuel filters for main engines, fuel and lube oil transfer system, air compressor, manifold with valves for all bilge compartments, ballast, fresh water pumps, and holding tanks. 530 gallon lube oil and 530 gallon hydraulic fluid tanks. Michigan bronze 4 blade 46" props run on 4" Stainless Steel shafts. HELM is manual wheel and ComNav jog stick tiller. MAIN ENGINES and gensets were rebuilt in 1999 and have under 2,000 hours since professional major overhaul.

Additional
MAIN DECK is entered via sheltered weather deck starboard into the DINING SALON with crescent shaped bar to starboard, and foreward to MAIN SALON with 6'8-1/2" headroom. There is a day head on this deck. Forward of the main salon on main deck are two areas with 7'2" headroom, one is a large work room in the foc'sle and a 9 x 12' Guest cabin with centerline Queen next aft. The forepeak cabin can be used for crew berthing or wet/dry/photo lab space. All spaces are fully insulated, wired, plumbed, and have separate zoned reverse cycle air conditioning and heating systems.

Remarks
This go-anywhere vessel had a full survey with audiogauge 12/2002. Both report her to be in good condition throughout. She has been in fresh water for most of the time since, and we expect essentially the same results on updates.
