The
History of the
Coos
King
The Coos King
was commissioned by the Government to haul rock barges for the
construction of the north and south jetties at Coos Head. The year
was 1923. She was constructed of 100% Port Orford cedar which at
the time was in huge supply in that part of Oregon. At 52’ long
and with her “Huge” Atlas Imperial 110 diesel engine she was
the first diesel tug ever built in Coos Bay. She was also the
largest wooden tug ever built there. She was actually constructed
by the Hilstrom Bros. ship yard. This yard suffered a fire many
years later however and so records pertaining to this boat as far
as I can find do not exist.
After
the jetties were built, (approx. 1930) the King was put to work by
numerous lumber companies hauling log rafts down the Coos River.
She also during this time carried the duty of Coos Bay pilot boat.
During this time she assisted in many ship rescues on Coos Head
and at one time saved the waterfront of Coos bay by pulling the
burning pier off its pilings and into the bay. I believe this was
in the early 40’s. She was re-powered in the 40’s with a 671
jimmy and continued out life as a working tug until 1978. In 78
she was stripped of all equipment and towed out to a mud flat to
be burned. My Grandfather who had skippered her for some 25 years
bought the salvage rights for a dollar and kept her from being
burned and re-floated her and towed her up Catching inlet where
she was then passed around for back moorage until 1980, when my
grandfather took me up to look at her. I ended up purchasing her
and had her trucked to Seattle where between 1981 and 1986 I
restored the hull to brand new. She received 4 new frames forward
and a new stem and 4 new frames aft as well as all her stern
blocking and approx. 45% of her planking was replaced. I was
fortunate enough to be able to obtain old growth Port Orford
planking from the same mill that milled the original lumber for
her in 1923. After that the Northwest wooden boat school was
commissioned to build her a new super structure and in 1991 this
was installed. Then in 1994 she was fitted with new deck beams and
a new deck.
